The essay allows you to separate yourself from the crowd. For Berkeley, the essays are extremely important. 99% of the applicants have qualifying test scores. The only way to tell apart the 15% or so they accept is through the essays, teacher recs, extracurriculars, etc.

As we consider each individual application - and rest assured, we do consider each one - we look beyond grades. We spend time evaluating your academic achievements in light of the opportunities available to you and your demonstrated capacity to contribute to the intellectual life at UC.
We have a whole appeal to process, so students are welcome to appeal their decision. A lot of the times, your appeal may go through and you may get admitted. There's a lot of that, where I don't think students who take the chance and lie on their application realize that we do fact-check at the end of the day.
Pick topics that allow you to peel away layers, like an onion. You want to pick prompts that let you explore multiple levels of yourself, multiple thoughts, values, or qualities. If your essay zeroes in on a single point only (say creativity), then you've lost the chance to show more about yourself.
Under this umbrella handler, people (maybe one, maybe more) are assigned key areas — checking transcripts and extra-curricular activities, reading essays, etc. In the end, of course, the application is viewed in its entirety by the overseer and likely a small committee.Feb 12, 2018

Unlike many colleges and universities, Cal Poly's application does not require an essay. Prospective students can fill out the general application through Cal State Apply and are then redirected to additional admission criteria based on the schools they are applying to.Oct 17, 2018
